Mr. Leonard Baines, Jr.
(May 5, 1929 - June 25, 2010)

Mr. Leonard Baines, Jr., age 81, of 324 Brock Road Rockmart, GA passed away Friday, June 25, 2010 in a Rome Medical Center following a three month illness.

He was born in Bartow County, GA on May 5, 1929 a son of G.L. Baines and Lucile Jenkins Baines. Mr. Baines had lived all of his life in Polk County, attended the Clarkwood Academy and graduated from Rockmart High School in 1947. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church and the Coalson Sunday School Class. He also served as an usher and a trustee of the church. Mr. Baines was employed by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation from 1951 until his retirement in 1987 where he built and tested functional test equipment. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish. He was also an Amateur Radio Operator whose call sign was K4IZO. Mr. Baines was a member of the Georgia Single Side Band NET and a member and NCS of the Georgia Cracker NET.

Mr. Baines was preceded in death by his parents, by a daughter, Roxanne Baines in 1972 and a sister, Helen Spain in 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Barbara Baines of Rockmart to whom he was married on November 23, 1955; one daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Sloman and husband David, Rockmart; one son, Mr. Randy Baines and wife Martha, Rockmart; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren: two brothers: Mr. George Baines, Aragon and Mr. Walter Baines, Rockmart.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Second Baptist Church of Rockmart with Rev. David Warriner and Minister Alvis Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will include: Ross Baines, Ricky Baines, Michael Baines, Donnis Baines, Chuck Garrison and Shane Garrison.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home and at other hours may be contacted at the residence of Randy and Martha Baines, 320 Knight Road, Rockmart.

The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the funeral of Mr. Leonard Baines, Jr..

(Note: Len was one of the charter members of the Polk County Cemetery Preservation Committee. He helped locate several old cemeteries in Polk County and along with his wife, Barbara, serveyed some of the cemeteries.)
