 Los Angeles County California Newspapers, 1894

Population, 101,454; chiefly agricultural. Los Angeles county comprises an area of 3,584,000 acres. Almost every variety of grain, vegetable, fruit, nut or berry, produced in temperate or subtropical latitudes flourishes here. Apples, peaches, oranges, lemons, grapes and figs, are all grown to perfection. Nectarines, apricots, prunes, guavas, pomegranates, English walnuts, olives, almonds and figs are among the established products. The assessed valuation of the county of Los Angeles is $82,616,576. The minerals successfully mined in the county are: gold, silver copper, coal, asphaltum, graphite, iron, tin, limestone, building stone, clay, mineral paint clay, gypsum, borate of lime, silica, kaolin, petroleum, borax, epsom salts, nitrate of soda, and salt. Los Angeles, the county seat, is the second city in size in the State. Eight lines of railroad center here  the Southern Pacific, California Southern, Los Angeles and San Gabriel, and Atlantic Pacific, and three branches of the Southern Pacific.
