Nebraska was organized as a territory in 1854 and was admitted as a state in 1867. It has a land area of 77,000 square miles, while its extreme breadth is 415 miles and length 205 miles. The surface is a rolling prairie and the soil exceedingly fertile in the eastern part of the State, while the western part is well adapted to grazing. The State is being rapidly and thickly populated by a liberal, progressive and thrifty people. Population 1,058,910.

Since the issuance of our preceding edition there has been the usual number of newspaper changes in this and other States mentioned in this work. The several industries throughout the State have largely increased, and in every branch and direction show unusual prosperity.

We give a brief description in the following pages of the several counties, with a tabulated list of the newspapers published in each.
