State of Oregon - Dallas, Polk
County
Dallas, Polk County, PO and County Seat,
lies on the north side of the La Creole, or Rickreal
River. 15 miles west of Salem. This is a flourishing
Inland town, in the midst of a very fertile section, and
is distinguished for the energy and enterprise of its
citizens. The town was incorporated by Act of the last
Legislature with a charter prohibiting the sale of
intoxicating liquors, except on the prescription of a
practicing physician. The La Creole, which runs through
the town, has sufficient power to turn the machinery for
numerous manufactories, among which is the largest
tannery in the State, a large wagon factory, flouring
and other mills. The La Creole Academy is a flourishing
institution. The town contains three churches, and
Lodges of Odd Fellows, Masons, and Good Templars. The
coast range of mountains rise a few miles to the west,
and the broad valley of the Willamette extends far to
the east, giving surroundings of picturesque scenery and
a country as lovely as it is fertile. One newspaper, the
Dallas Itemizer, is published weekly.
