Delaware, one of the Middle Atlantic states of the United States, is bounded on the north by Pennsylvania; on the east by New Jersey and the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean; and on the west and south by Maryland. It lies between approximately 38º 27′ and 39º 50′ north latitude, and between 75º 3′ and 75º 47′ west longitude. The state extends about 96 miles from north to south and varies from 9 to 35 miles in width from east to west. It covers an area of approximately 1,982 square miles, or 1,268,480 acres, making it the second smallest state in the nation.
