British Columbia Canada Newspapers, 1894
This province is vast in its dominion,
and is but sparsely settled, its area being nearly 400,000
square miles, and its population about 59,000, of which
two-thirds are Indians. Victoria is the provincial Government
seat. The chief industries of British Columbia are gold and
silver mining and salmon canning. Its chief products are furs,
lumber and oil. Much of the territory is mountainous, but some
of the islands and the southwest portion of the mainland have
considerable arable lands. At and near Nanaimo are situated some
of the largest coal-mines on the Pacific Coast. The Canadian
Pacific Railway, terminating at Vancouver, is doing much toward
advancing the interests of this province.
