Tennessee, one of the south central United States, is bounded on the north by Kentucky and Virginia; on the east by North Carolina; on the south by Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi; and on the west by Arkansas and Missouri, from which it is separated in part by the Mississippi River. It lies between about 35º and 36º 41′ north latitude, and between 81º 39′ and 90º 28′ west longitude. The state measures about 430 miles from east to west and about 110 miles from north to south. It contains approximately 42,144 square miles, or 26,972,000 acres.
